As digital technology creeps into every facet of human life, the need for “smart” systems becomes ever more requisite. Our desire for automation drives the production of software and hardware systems that are “aware” of their surroundings, particularly systems which are aware of us. However, the statistical models used to train these systems have no understanding of the context of images. Faces of Los Angeles uses facial recognition software and aerial images from the Los Angeles urban area to explore the disconnection between the “smart”, “aware” system and the environment in which we live.
